Why Does Stuff happen in our homes? Because stuff happens in life, that’s why. We tend to hang onto stuff that becomes clutter when we’ve experience catastrophic loss or simply fear it. Loss can be so profound that it changes our outlook on life and the stuff in our world. Fear of loss can be just as life changing. Sometimes both happen; catastrophic loss and fear of additional loss, so much so, that we build giant walls of stuff to protect ourselves. (I say ‘ourselves’ because professional organizers are not immune to it. That’s why we understand what our clients feel.)
If you’ve experienced loss, you are a survivor and you’re not alone. If you fear it, you’re normal and you’re not alone. Don’t let either to be the reason stuff builds up and burdens you. Life can be brutal, home is where we let go of all of the pain of the day and restore our strength for the next. The moment you recognize you no longer need or love an item, let it go; even if it’s one tiny thing. That one thing can open the door to another thing. ‘Thing’ being the operative word; it’s just a thing, not you, not your loved one; a thing…
